Six friends came together in fall 2009 united by little else but a keen enthusiasm for playing music. Some were veterans of open mics wishing to channel hometown heroes like Wilco and Califone. Others were schooled musicians, looking instead to classic and modern masters ranging from Debussy and Chopin to John Scofield and Soulive. Throw in a musically omnivorous insomniac of a drummer and an easy-going, tastefully adventurous saxophonist and you’ve got a notion of the disparate sounds echoing in the ears of this sextet.

Over a year later, after numerous gigs in dank basement apartments, church halls, and Chicago venues Elbo Room and Martyr’s, Lakesigns has emerged with a sound wholly their own. On the self-released No Wake EP and in performance, the band’s collaborative spirit gives life to unique brand of layered rock. Shades of their musical heroes still color the music these six musicians make. But there’s something new, something surprising that has excited both the members of Lakesigns and their growing audience.

Electrified unconventional chords and modal countermelodies drift underneath standard harmonies strummed on an acoustic guitar. Non-singers scream lyrics off mic for the thrill of it. Deceptively complex drumming patterns rivet the beat to simple folk voicings. Sweetly picked ukulele patterns turn ugly and menacing with distortion. And entire compositions buckle and rip with the power of feedback-laden crescendos of noise and song. This music is tension and release. This music is songs where melodies, tender and ordered, flirt with abrasion and chaos. This is music built on payoffs. Come see Lakesigns play.
